Contents

1 - Phenomenon of fire, combustion and fuels, types of fires, the combustion products
2 - Fire in buildings, developments, load and fire propagation models,
3 - Material Behavior, properties and classification (previous according to LNEC and current according to European Standard).
4 - Prevention and protection, standards, security rules, evacuation, emergency lighting, smoke control, detection and alarm. Extinguishing measures, extinguishers (fixed and mobile) and other systems (sprinkler), will also be focused.
5 - Checking the fire action in structures, used in case studies:
5.1 Concrete structures;
5.2 Steel structures;
5.3 Wood structures.

Learning Outcomes

Conceptual buildings' behaviour under fire conditions and its structural materials as well.
Study of national and international fire regulations and standards, including the implementation of active and passive protection measures .
Structural safety and stability of steel, reinforced concrete and wood structural elements under fire acording Eurocode Standards.

The student will be able to:
- Develop, written and drawn, parts of construction design, in particular related to SCIE.
- Use and interpreting a broad standardization of support to be used to achieve the requirements of fire safety.
Terminal goals:
- Evaluate and decide at design procedure, according to several features and sources of information (scientific and commercial, from the Web and companies), materials to be use for constructive remedies that associated with techniques of active and passive protection can improve fire safety in a building (to design or retrofitting).
