Learning Outcomes
The student should be able to:
- Recognize the rules, principles and methodology of geotechnical design defined in EC7, specially those concerning shallow foundations, pile foundations and earth retaining structures;
- Recognize the rules, principles and methodology defined in EC2, concerning shallow and pile foundations design;
- Develop the design of foundations and earth retaining walls.
The student should be able to:
- Select the type and characteristics of foundation or earth retaining structure, according to the interpretation of the geotechnical prospection results and the building characteristics;
- Develop the geotechnical and structural design of shallow foundations;
- Develop preliminary geotechnical design of pile foundation in compression;
- Develop geotechnical and structural design of earth retaining walls;
- Characterize the different construction technologies of deep foundations and identify situations in which each technology could or should be implemented;
- Characterize the different construction technologies of earth retaining flexible walls and identify situations in which each technology could or should be implemented;
- Develop the design of strutted flexible earth retaining structures.
