Description

Course Description – Electrical and Electromechanical Converters

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, design, and operation of electrical and electromechanical energy converters. It examines the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa, with emphasis on the analysis, operation, and practical applications of transformers and electrical machines used in modern power and industrial systems.

The course covers key topics including magnetic fields, electromagnetic induction, energy conversion principles, transformers, induction machines, synchronous machines, and commutator (DC) machines. Students analyse equivalent circuits, operating characteristics, efficiency, losses, control methods, and performance under different operating conditions. Laboratory work and practical exercises reinforce theoretical concepts through the analysis and testing of electrical machines and converters.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to identify and analyse the main types of electrical and electromechanical converters, explain their operating principles, evaluate their performance characteristics, and apply appropriate engineering methods for the selection, operation, and control of electrical machines and transformers in practical engineering applications.
