Bachelor's of Electrical Engineering
INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS
Description
Course Description – Industrial Electronics
This course provides students with advanced knowledge of industrial electronic systems, focusing on the application of analogue and digital electronic components in power conversion, control systems, and measurement applications. It develops the ability to analyse, design, and implement power electronic converters used in industrial automation, electrical drives, and energy conversion systems.
The course covers key topics including power electronics fundamentals, DC-DC converters, inverters, diode and controlled rectifiers, modulation techniques, semiconductor power devices, triggering and protection circuits, thermal behaviour of power components, and converters for DC and AC motor drives. Students study both static and dynamic characteristics of converter systems and apply modern simulation and design tools such as SPICE and MATLAB/Simulink for analysing and developing power electronic solutions.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to analyse and design basic power electronic circuits, select appropriate converter topologies for specific industrial applications, evaluate the operation of rectifiers, inverters, and DC-DC converters, apply simulation tools for system design, and implement practical power electronic solutions for control and energy conversion systems.
Learning Outcomes
• demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic power electronics circuits design., • use of modern simulation techniques (SPICE, MATLAB/SIMULINK) in order to design power electronics converters, • Select a suitable type of power inverter according to requirements, • describe the operation of single-phase and three-phase rectifiers, • describe the operation of inverters, • describe the operation of basic DC-DC converters, • compare the operation of basic DC-DC converters: continuous- and discontinuous conductive mode, • identify the basic circuits of DC-DC converters
